Starting New Paragraphs in Fiction

By: David A. Cathcart

Knowing when to start a new paragraph in a novel or short story should be a simple matter, but for many writers–especially beginning writers–it’s anything but. Like most aspects of writing, when it comes to paragraphs, there are rules, and then there are interpretations of the rules. So there’s definitely some room for flexibility here. To keep things simple, let’s start with a few basic rules and then look at how you can stretch, bend or break them to your liking.

Three occasions when you must start a new paragraph

When you start a new topic: You may think this is only true of non-fiction, but it’s also true of fiction. Just as you don’t want run-on sentences–sentences that mash two separate thoughts together–you don’t want run-on paragraphs either. So if you have a paragraph that sets the scene for the exterior of an eerie haunted house, don’t jam in a description of the protagonist’s angst about whether or not he should accept the challenge to spend the night inside. Use your first paragraph to establish the house and a separate paragraph to establish your protagonist’s feelings about it.
When you change time or location: Whenever you skip forward or backward in time or move from one location to another, start a new paragraph. Going back to our haunted house example, if the action starts outside the house, begin a new paragraph as soon as the action moves inside. Alternatively, if you move from the protagonist’s impressions of the present moment to an incident in his past when he faced a similar challenge, begin a new paragraph.
When a new character begins to speak: This one is pretty straightforward. When it comes to dialogue, only one speaker per paragraph.

Two occasions when you may want to start a new paragraph

When a speech is running long: Ideally, you’re not going to have your characters rattle off paragraphs of uninterrupted dialogue for pages at a stretch. However, sometimes a longer speech is required. To help make it easier on the reader, it’s a good idea to break up longer speeches with snippets of action. These breaks help things flow and allows for non-verbal communication, which is a key part of speech.
To emphasize something for dramatic effect: Sometimes starting a new paragraph or allowing a single sentence to stand on its own is a great way to emphasize a key point, get a laugh, or otherwise control the pace of the story to your advantage. A word to the wise though: This technique will only produce a dramatic effect if used sparingly.

November 19-23

After you have completed and edited your short story you can begin working on the following project. Our short stories should be completed on Wednesday.

Literacy Volunteers and The Crazy Man Update

We are looking for new volunteers to help with the Willow Park Literacy Program. (one to one Reading support) Please contact Joni Mallabone at jemallabone@cbe.ab.ca if you would like to help with this program.  Training will be provided.  The time commitment is flexible – we will work around your schedule!!  We will be thrilled to have your support with this worthwhile program.

As we have been reading, The Crazy Man in class, we have been discussing some strong topics. Some of these topics include the death of a pet, racism, stereotyping, and civil rights. This book has a strong message of growth and acceptance, and we are discussing these ideas within class. If you think that your son or daughter would benefit in speaking about some of these topics further, to strengthen their understanding, I highly encourage you to ask them about the book and discuss it with them to help their personal comprehension of some of these complex areas.

Welcome to Grade 7 Humanities

Hello,

A huge welcome to our new Willow Park families and hello again to those returning to us this year. My name is Avery Ruuska and I am very pleased to teach your child this year. I teach Grade 7 Humanities to 7-4 and 7-5. I share 7-3 with Ms. Brown.

Thank you very much for sending your child in with a binder, duo-tangs, a pencil kit, 2 sharpies (one fine, one thick) and a box of Kleenex to share with the class for the upcoming cold season.

Homework:
I recommend reading for 20-30 minutes per evening. Daily reading is critical to increasing comprehension, speed and the understanding of how our language is constructed.

Homework is periodically sent home with your child to complete.  This work consists of items that were not finished in class.  This homework will always be checked so that students will develop positive habits of meeting deadlines and being accountable for their work.

All deadlines are posted on the board and blog as reminders.

Humanities Curriculum:
At Willow Park, all courses are taught through an Arts-Centered Learning approach.  Humanities is no exception. English Language Arts is combined with the Social Studies curriculum to provide a rich understanding of topics and skills.  Students will use both inquiry and the Arts to develop their understanding.

The aim of English Language Arts is to enable each student to understand and appreciate the English language. To read, write and speak confidently and competently. I have added the Grade 7 Book List to my blogger. Students are expected to read a minimum of 3 books from the list this year. The books are available in the school library, public library, bookstores and in my classroom. Students are encouraged to read a variety of types of books and may choose books not on the list.

In Social Studies, students will explore the origins, histories and movements of people who have forged the foundation of Canadian Confederation. Students will examine how political, economic, social and demographic changes have shaped Canadian history and Canada today.

Please check the blogger periodically at, ruuskahum7.blogspot.com and if you have any questions please email me at, avruuska@cbe.ab.ca

I am looking forward to our time together,

Avery Ruuska

Thank You
